81' sitting for year what do I need to do before starting?

Remove this ad
Hey guys,
My 1981 Fleetwood Hearse has been sitting in my mom's driveway for a year now.
I have been working like crazy and had no time to focus on it, especially since i don't live home anymore.
I really want to get her back on the road now, but I am very afraid to start her after this long(I'm afraid something might happen) She only has 65K on her and she ran BEAUTIFULLY before i had to take her off the road.

What should I do or have done before i start her up, or should i just try and start her? I really dont want to ruin her, more than i have by letting her sit

Any advice is good!
~Thanks

Make sure battery is FULLY charged. Crank it over with the distributor disconnected to pre lube engine. Then reconnect wires ( the ones plugging into the side of the dist cap.) Get it to operating temperature then drain the oil and replace. Just verify fluids are full, coolant and oil before starting. Antifreeze gets acidic after awhile so change it as well. If were mine I would have the brake fluid flushed as well.

I would also put the gas to the floor while you crank so it doesn't pull fuel into the engine. You don't want to wash what little oil off that may remain on the cylinders/rings. Just don't pump the gas so you don't flood it with fuel from the accelerator pump and undo the intent. This also works on fuel injected engines, called "clear flood mode" that is modeled after the trait of carbureters that doesn't allow fuel to flow from the jets when the throttle is wide open, since the venturi effect is minimized.

I agree. Do this while cranking with no spark.
