what is the torque converter clutch?

getting code saying torque converter clutch has engagement problem what does that mean and what controles that clutch. have many problems with this 84 fleetwood brougham and just trying work out all the bugs electrical problems but body is excellent and interior great.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong or leave anything out, but the Torque Converter Clutch kicks in in your O/D gear and is what provides your highway fuel eceonomy. Usually it's the TCC solenoid that goes bad on these cars. Lucky for you it's $150 at a trans shop. Don't let anyone flush your trans fluid either, it's usually the first thing they wanna do. If the TCC itself is shot then I believe you're up for a rebuild. Most likely the solenoid though.......
