Guys, I'm thinking of selling my '92 D'Elegance, not because I don't like it nor does it have any issues,.....I"m just wanting a used BMW 7 series. After driving them....wow......and yet, here I am, considering selling a problem free beautiful paid for last year Brougham for a vehicle that can be very very expensive to maintain and is much more problematic. Why? the ride, drive, power and quality of construction/assemby is awesome, but not the mechanicals/accessories. I've been really reading up on the forums so I know what I'd be getting into.....but..
Talk me out of it! I can't do both!!!!! I won't be in a unique ride anymore.
Crazy idea #2: throw a STS ( Squire Turbo Systems) rear turbo kit on it ( been researching them....mounts near the back of the axle) to give me another 100hp....I would imagine on my L03 ( 305?). But that would cost me what I have in the car when all said and done. Crazy idea, I know, but how cool would that be?
7-series is, of course, NICE. I ended up with my 93 9C1 as a combination of loving the Impala SS as well as having some obsession with police cars, so it was perfect. But I always felt like the 7-series was what I was going for in terms of execution. The late 90s/early 2000s one with the sport package and 17" wheels - in black please.
But yeah, they can be a real headache electrically and somewhat mechanically. Many parts aren't that bad, but some are, and I dunno how long it would take for you to get soured on the car.
Then Chrysler came out with the LX cars and the SRT-8 series was born. In some ways, I'd sell all my GM iron and get a 300C SRT-8. In other ways, no.
There's the G8 GT, CTS-V and such. But those are smaller than the vehicles we have been talking about and would not appeal to a traditional Brougham owner.
My recommendation? Try a 94-96 FWB. The LT1 works well stock and you can place the car within a very wide performance spectrum per your skills, desire and, of course, wallet. Problem is, the faster it goes, it goes from Caddy to hotrod. That might ruin the appeal there.
Yeah the 7-series sure are nice. Which generation you looking at?
I sometimes dream of a 2002+ 7-series when my Roadmaster DD gets worn out. There's not much late-model stuff out there for people like us who like full-size, V8, RWD, gadget-laden cars. Potential service and parts costs scare me a little, but they do seem like well-build machines.
Deprecitation on those 7-series is outtasite and if they prove reliable bargains could be had a couple years from now. You ever notice that big Benzes hold their value while small Benzes don't? And that small BMWs hold their value while big BMWs don't? I've always found that interesting.

I've always found this to be true of Luxury cars in general, that's what got me into Cadillacs in the first place..I can always get a fantastic car that originally cost a bundle, for very little when it was just a few years old.. And speaking of BMW 7's.. I have a 98 740iL, contact me off list. or PM me if you'd like some insight on actual ownership, and how it compares with our Caddies...I'd be glad to discuss it in depth, but I think this is probably not the place for non caddy discussion .
Ah,so you guys DO understand my dilemma! I"m only looking at '99-01 750 (v12) or 740 (v8). I still really enjoy my FWB though. I recognize the value/size/performance of the '94-96 models and have considered them as well, though I've read too many complaints about quality of build and materials compared to other Caddy's. Still, I love the size etc.
Perhaps I just want a change, but darn it, I"m so practical, I have a hard time getting away from it. My '92 costs virtually $0 to operate, not hard to repair and stands out, but man, the driving of the 7 series....wow.

I'd actually like to know myself, I too like the old big BMW's, I would love to get my hands on a 740i with a maual trans.
Yeah cmon Cadmat tell us about your car! I think it's an appropriate post... given that us RWD fans are running out of late-model options and need alternatives.
I doubt the moderator would bump you... unlike some of the overzealous moderators on a few of the other forums.
