Exhaust Manifold Bolts

(Its a 96 FWB.) I'm about to get the driver's side manifold bolts and gasket replaced at the dealer. They said the labor fot the driver's side is $145 and the passenger side would be about $300 because there is more stuff to move or something. I'm just doing the driver's side because thats the only side I hear a leak on. The back bolt is missing a head and they say I might have to get another head if they can't get the bolt out. Only 122,000 miles on the motor, do you thank its that bad? Should I get dealer GM bolts and gasket or something aftermarket? I;ve looked at JEGS and couldn't find any. Thanks!!

Re: Exhaust Manifold Bolts

Yes, go with grade 8 bolts, not the ones from the dealer. You can find them on ebay. If I were you, I would buy the bolts, then use one to see if you can put in in that rear hole and tighten it down. Often, the rear bolt just falls out. If you cant get it to go in (because the bolt broke off in the head), then that $150 is well spent. Having taken off manifolds to replace with headers, and extracting broken bolts, getting that done for that price is a no-brainer. The factory gasket is the best out there for a stock manifold (layered steel).

If they tell you they need to replace the head, just leave. Any good tech can get a broken bolt out, even if they need to weld a nut on it to back it out.

Just so you know what they have to do:
- remove all bolts (hard to get at)
- remove cat
- drill/extract broken bolt

Get them to cut out the spacer bar on the manifold when they are at it. There is a TSB on it that they can check. Cutting out the spacer makes the manifold less likely to crack. Check the manifold on the bottom. See how there is a bar between the front but not the back? It has been cut. If you buy aftermarket, they now come pre-cut.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Bolts

Yep, no need to replace the head. They are crazy!

I need to fix the broken bolt on the driver's side manifold in the wagon. I might put the shortie headers from my Fleetwood on the wagon and then get long tubes for the Fleetwood... hmm....

Re: Exhaust Manifold Bolts

I checked ebay an there are many kinds of bolts. What size are they? Here's the ebay page I was looking at.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Bolts

Go to another place, sounds like a rip off....big time.

My mechanic had to tap 2 new bolt holes and 3 more were broke off but came out and 3 were ok, and he charged me 300 total.

Go to a independent place.
