The only other programmatic design thing that would cause it not to work is the reverse cancel. Maybe this is common knowledge, but I scored a roof harness from a junkyard Caprice and installed rear reading lights and front map lights under the mirror by installing a different mirror (9C1s didn't get that stuff). Well, I still had the big ticket writing light but lost the connection after I put in a civilian harness. But there was an extra wire so I spliced it in. After I was all done, I noticed the big ticket writing light was dead!! But wait - when I put the car in reverse, it came on!! WTF!? Turns out what I plugged into was the electrochromatic cancel signal that goes hot ONLY when in reverse to not impede your rearward view (that is, if you back up like a man using your mirrors

). So that's how I know that...
So that part could be live all the time for some strange reason. Probably not but you never know.
