I bought a new outer beltline weatherstrip/wipe for my 77 Coupe but it has a small chrome bead that would necessitate removing the original door ledge molding (integral to original wipe). Is there a way to install the new one without removing the original or is there a part number for this item that can be bought somehwere that is close to the original type?
many thanks |

You'd then tack it on with screws or brads. I'd have to take my door apart to see exactly how this could work, but there's enough surface in the door structure to make this possible. BTW, where did you get this part? Best of luck.

I need the "window sweeps"/"bottom-of-window-weather strip for my '80 Coupe, too. Where did you acquire these pieces, kewpie?
Wonder if the '80 ones would be different from the '77-'79 coupes... |

I've never seen them anywhere, so that would be good news! Can you get them for the outside too? Alot get cracked from sunlight. (especially the old GM wagon's rear window rubber... but I don't mean to thread-jack.. haha)

It is xtra long and the holes for the factory screws are slotted to fit, but the original part was integral to the chrome window/doorledge while this replacement has a 3/16" chrome bead on it where it looks to overlap the door ledge.
I wass wondering if anyone had used these from 1A Auto before as I would not want to eliminate the original chrome trim on the beltline/door ledge. I suppose the 3/16" lip could be cut off, but that would take some careful cutting with a Dremel tool or something.
Someone had OEM ones for $80 each but I was told that these things are not as critical as one may think because some water will always get down into the door anyway. (These from 1A Auto are about 25$ ea. and they have them in sets for inner/outer as well.) I am thinking the 77-80 GM Coupes all had the same doors, i.e. Olds, Buick Cad, but would have to verify.
Thanks to all for responding.

It's the outside strips I'm looking for my '80, since the inside ones are good. I've got the GM part number for these outside 'sweeps' but the part is completely obsolete. However, some GM dealership might have 'em lying around somewhere. Dad's out right now but I'll get the part number from him and post it here incase you want to try your local dealership.
There aren't available through NAPA either. Wonder if any reproduction rubber places make these?? If so I'd be extremely interested. Right now water easily get inside my doors, and the windows make a squealing noise when in motion because they're not being held in place quite as tightly as they could be... |

Our dear friend Anthony responded to a private message I had sent earlier this week in regard to this same issue. He sent this link: http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Weatherstri...SK00156/484825
Is this the stuff you're working with, kewpie?
EDIT: Found these ones... appear to be the same as the 2 Door Fleetwood in measurements... are these the ones? http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Weatherstri...SK00156/484823
And could you snap a picture of these 1aauto ones? I want to see what is meant by the chrome bead, and can't really tell from the picture on the site.

The 'bead' is actually the 'lip' of the metal over which the rubber wipe is laminated. If you look at the INNER wipe on a Coupe, this item looks more like that inner wipe with the narrow lip that goes over the fake woodgrain on the door ledge.
I emailed 1A Auto but have not heard back from them. When I calleod them 2 months ago re: this item didn'tlook right i told them I wouldn't have time to put it on because of the weather here in Michigan and they told me to take my time and if I ddin't use it they would refund my money aslong as the part was not unwrapped.
I will call them tomorrow and see if they sent me the wrong part, altho this is not the INSIDE wipe because the felt 'spacer' in the center of the length of the item faces inward toward the window and this item must go on the OUTER side of the door/window.
Obviously, all their wipes have this chrome bead and they might know how to adapt it to the 77-79 Cadd w/o altering the original factory chrome piece on the door/window ledge.
I will try to respond tomorrow (later today actually) regarding what I find out. |

| | Cadillac Owners Member Cadillac(s): Cadillac | | | | | Re: 77 coupe beltline/window 'wipes'/wthrstrip I called 1A Auto parts and told them my problem. They said their replacement wipe had to replace the original chrome window strip (which is much wider than their chrome 'bead.')
I asked about their refund poicy and they said they would send me a label and an 'RMA' # so I could return the part and they would pay return shipping and then credit my credit card with the refund.
I will wait for the credit from them and re-post. Sounds so far that they are very good to deal with.
Now I will keep looking for a replacement part (!) If anyone finds a way to do it, let me know. |

A lot of places would take it and run, especially online. That's one point for 1A Auto, but it seems their product isn't quite what we're looking for.
I've already started checking big two-door GM's in my area and so far, every window sweep has been worse than mine. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
