Car turns off on hard right turns when flooring gas on fwb

Remove this ad
Ok so I had to replace my fuel pump after my car left me stranded with 1/4 gas in the tank and stuff............

Ever since when ever i have about 1/4 gas or sometimes even 1/2 tank if I make a real hard right turn the car stutters like it lacked gas when it's at 1/2 tank. But if it's at 1/4 tank the car will stall as if it ran out of gas.

Could I have installed the pump wrong? I don't have this problem when turning left only right is when the car wants to shut off.

The harder the turn the more likely it shuts off.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm hoping its not what i read about some older cars that some little fins inside the tank break off and allow the gas to sway too much thus starving the pump of fuel on hard turns.....any fix for this.....

is it carbureted? i guess not if it's the car in your avatar. seems like the pump has to be getting starved on left turns.

If it your FW, the Impala/Caprices had lots of issues with weak power to the fuel pump, it might have burned up the harness and it is failing. I wouldn't be surprised if the FW does too.

IF you can connect up a ammeter in place of the fuse (keep the line fused!), you can see if in turns the current changes or drops to zero.

It only happens on right turns though....... its even happened when its on 1/2 tank or so.

It wont do it when driving straight though.

Re: Car turns off on hard right turns when flooring gas on fwb

You know, I am almost positive this problem was on ImpalaSSforums.com at one time (http://www.impalassforum.com/vBulletin/ is the new link, the old ultimate bb is almost dead, all got xferred to vbulletin)

I think it did get found and solved.

Fuel pump pickup was an issue on older 90-92 FWD C&H cars, it was too short, but happened in turns either direction, pickup was like 4 inches long.

Will it do it in a parking lot just taking a hard right? But same turn only left won't do it?

I still would like to see if pump current changes or shuts off.

Oil pressure used to do that, probably still does, when oil pump pressure dropped, it would kill the fuel pump to svae the engine.

Re: Car turns off on hard right turns when flooring gas on fwb

Does it sputter and die (like pump shut down) or like someone turned the key off?

Was the pump wiring harness in good shape? I haven't had these tanks out, but the ones I have had I can't imagine being able to install it wrong, unless the pickup isn't on right or fell off (unlikely) or there is a hole in the pump lines somewhere?

Does the gas gauge do anything goofy at that time??

I still would like to see pump current while you are in a turn compared to straight, that will tell you if pump turned off. And tell you in either corner if it did it, regardless of the engine noticed it or not.

I had the same problem on a 92 Deville and it was the plastic cage around the fuel pump in the tank. It was a known problem that the plastic became brittle with age and broke into pieces. I replaced the tank with a tank that had a metal cage around the pump and no more problems. The cage serves as a resivoir to keep the pump from starving on turns.
