n3wb questions, one to Ultra Slow Greetings All,
I am a newly married man with a wife who has an 87 Brougham that is now, well, mine =) 82k orig miles, canary yellow with some rust patches (dreading body work but oh well) and otherwise in great interior condition.
I am working on getitng the car up to running specs, everything seems to be somewhat 'ok' basic tune-up with replaced 8mm plug wires and a K&N air filter made a huge difference, but now I move on to electrical and other issues.
I read a wonderful set of posts from Ultra Slow and Destoryer about swapping in a 403 and perhaps in the future that may be a plan for this car but something Ultra Slow said in the post I am curious about:
"I would also not use the electronic distributor or carb, even though they will work, they just NEVER run properly and you would save yourself much grief by getting rid of that stuff even on the 307, and for sure on the 403. Get the carb, dist and manafolds from a 77-79 403 car in the wrecking yard."
Ultra Slow, do you recommend replacing the distributor and carb on the 307 that is on my '87 to get a bit better performance out of the engine? Stock parts or should these be replaced with items from Summit racing, etc?
Other issues, the dreaded 'check engine' light comes on frequently but not caused by any one action. I cannot obtain the OBD codes using off + warmer, even though both buttons perform their normal functions on the ECC. Should the '87 Brougham use OBD codes or possibly flash codes? Or is there some secret way to push the buttons to obtain OBD codes that I am just not finding?
Any info anyone can suggest would be helpful... thanks! |
