Opera Light fix - 1986 Fleetwood Brougham

I have a 1986 Fleetwood Brougham (RWD) and for the past couple years both of the side opera lights have not been working. What I can't figure out is how to get to the actual lamp in order change it....im not sure how to take out the opera lamp fixture without damaging it. Anyone got any recommendations?

There are no bulbs in these lights. Try doing a search for the complete story.

If youre referring to the lights behind the back seat, the swivel thing with the lens pops out.Its kind of spring loaded in there. It pops off and on pretty easily without damaging it.I replaced my white bulbs with green ones,it looks pretty sweet.

Is it possible that - since those lights are NEON - that you might try to get some kind of replacement from some SIGNMAKER who makes the things for bars and such?
It would be a real custom job of blown glass and all, but since it would be really small and using small tubing, I wonder if it might be under $50.00 or so for both sides.
A high price, but you'd have something perfect.

They aren't neon though, it's just a piece of tape that glows when electricity runs through it. And I believe it also gets wrecked by UV light, which is why all of ours don't work anymore.
Since EL tape is still made for other uses (such as this http://www.jab-tech.com/Mutant-Mods-...d-pr-3139.html) I'm surprised no one has started making replacements for 80's cars that used them.

Re: Opera Light fix - 1986 Fleetwood Brougham

okay, I just went out and tried to get a better look at them, I have always figured I'd deal with that later and get them lit, whether or not they were meant to, but seeing as it is such a problem and everybody needs a solution, I went outside to check mine, in spite of all the old ladies watering their lawns at 2 AM with their sprinklers pointed at my yard/house/driveway/garage/car...well, basically everywhere but their own yards... Anyhow, I like how the factory even labeled them L and R for which side they go on. Okay, let's cut to the chase. If anybody knows HOW to get them off and get inside of that little spot (behind the driver's door, but before the second door, Opera Lights are indeed NOT the little swivel lights in the back of the car's interior...and I couldn't help with those, because my car doesn't have those anyway)

Provided anybody can clue me in on how to access these little demons, I will try getting mine out, find a solution, manufacture said solution, photodocument and post my findings/undergoings and since I will most likely have "leftovers" from whatever tape or LED's I wire in there, I will even try making a set for whomever clues me on on these mysterious nuisances and mail them a set of whatever I built or the supplies to change them (If it is just the tape)

So basically, if you tell me, I may be able to help out and stop being just another useless forum member...or you can just not tell me and laugh when I go and cry in the corner...either way, you win.

Re: Opera Light fix - 1986 Fleetwood Brougham

OK. On my 1983 Fleetwood Brougham coupe, I removed the inside side trims with the reading lights attached and unscrewed & removed the inside opera window cover. You will see three holes inside of the opera light, the middle hole will have two wires fed into it. The top and bottom holes will access the two mounting nuts. these nuts cut a thread onto plastic lugs, part of the opera light. You will need a long reach 11 mm socket with an extension bar but don't forget to put some sticky blue tack on the end of the socket or you will loose the nuts for good.
I can't seem to separate the electrical plug at this stage and I only broke a lug trying to remove the lens, so I'm stumped now.
    Can anyone help me?
