I was at a funeral today for a friend of mine and the procession was led by 3 1996 Fleetwood Broughams. One livery vehicle (this one had leather) and two FWB's with cloth (????). All three cars were a beautiful Marblehead Grey. Flawless with 20k on all three. Just odd to me that the FWB sedans had cloth. Is this normal?

Not normal, but not unheard of. A select few were ordered with cloth, but by the mid '90s most luxury minded buyers went straight for the leather.
Those Fleets sound beautiful, I would have come home with one.
BTW, sorry if this is tacky of me, but there never was a better time to listen to Elton John. |

BBB | Yes - Cloth was standard, leather optional |

No real numbers, but it is quite a rare feature--even though it was standard in both regular and Brougham models.
Just happened that, in this caliber of car, when most were ordered, checking off leather was a no brainer for most and the cars with cloth were largely special ordered specifically as such. It's very nice, but just not as popular in a luxury car. And when you do find it, it's usually on a base car, with the heated/memory Brougham cloth being the rarest.
Here's a good comparison of pics that I saved.
1) Base cloth:
2) Base leather:
3) Brougham cloth:
4) Brougham leather:

Yes, standard, and preferred by some, especially when they were new. But, as expected, being the flagship Cadillac, the leather option was pretty much always checked off.
And, ooohhh...3 Marblehead/Fawn Grey ones in a group! My favorite color |

BTW, sorry if this is tacky of me, but there never was a better time to listen to Elton John. | Done that. Not tacky. I asked them when they are selling them. He said they are trading in the near future. Got back to my office and called two salesman I am good friends with and said if they see them, call me. I am buying one as soon as it is traded. Quote:

THanks for the replies, I had no idea that cloth was even an option. Never seen one in cloth. |

If the leather used in the Broughams is the same as the leather used in the deVilles like mine or the Roadmasters, I'd take the cloth, as the leather in the Roadmaster and the deVilles like mine is nothing to brag about; tough, vinyl like, not plush. The Nuance leather used in the '90s Sevilles and Eldorados is so much better...softer, plusher, nice smelling, holds up well. And I'd be willing to bet that they used the same cloth in the FWB's as they did in my deVille and that is to die for! Soft, plush, velvet like, easy to clean, holds up well to dirt!
Mark me down for cloth please!

Mark me down for cloth please! | From my experience, no, it isn't. The Roadmaster, for one, seems to have harder and shinier leather that is of a lower grade and clearly the spray on color type. I believe the Fleetwoods is partially too, as most, but it generally feels much softer, actually does smell like leather when clean and conditioned, wears differently than the cheaper stuff, and has more thorough and smooth coloring. It was the first thing I noticed after having had the '92 Roadmaster for a few months and then getting the '93 FWB--just felt and looked completely different, and so much nicer. |
