1956 Cadillac Distributor Problem

Remove this ad
I am restoring a 1956 Cadillac series 75 limousine and I am in the process of getting the rebuilt origional 365 cubic inch engine to fire for the first time. After getting the car to fire for the first time, I noticed that the distributor wants to rise significantly, while it is spinning. It slides up about 3/8 of an inch to 1/2 inch during rotation. I did get the car to fire, but was reluctant to continue and get the car to actually run in case that there is a problem with the distribuor. Two mechanics have told me that this situation is not normal. The distributor does seat correctly against the engine and it does drive the oil pump and I have verified that the pump is indeed pumping oil. I am assuming that the distributor should want to remain seated against the engine and not want to rise up and down when running. How would you suggest that I correct this problem ? Dan

Re: 1956 Cadillac Distributor Problem

Is the distributor hold down clamp tight? It cannot raise from the block if the hold down clamp is tight.
