    Question Northstar rebuild

I have read some postings claiming that the Northstar engine can not be rebuilt. Is this true? If so why not ? If this is not true why is this disinformation not being challenged by Cadillac inorder to protect the reputation of what I think is a very fine piece of engineering. I respectfully request the courtesy of a reply. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Northstar rebuild

I have interest here also. I have been told the same thing about rebuilding the Northstar. I am having an engine problem (oil pressure) on my 97 Eldorado and looking at a remanufactured engine now...new ones are very expensive. Sure would be much cheaper if a rebuild could be done. Anybody have any answer/advice?? Thanks

    Re: Northstar rebuild

From what I have found out a rebuild can be performed on this motor. The thing that really confuses me is the lack of communication from Cadillac concerning this issue. They could put this issue to rest with better communication, education, supply, and availability of parts. This would go along way in protecting the huge investment they made in developing this engine as well as making their customers happy. Word of mouth endorsements of the Northstar system can go a long way in improving Cadillac's image and market share among the newest generation of buyers. To neglect the NS rebuild issue is not a wise move.

I agree completely. As the owner of a 1994 Cadillac Concours, who loves his car, If the engine ever failed, I would want to replace it, rather than replace the car with a 55,000.00 2005 Cadillac DTS, the comparable model. Thanks

I also have a '99 Deville De'Elegance with a bad Northstar. Shouldn't GM admit that these engines had a problem and at least offer us an incentive to buy a new car? Why don't they make some kind of an offer to all those that were burned and now are looking to buy from a different manufacturer!

    Re: Northstar rebuild

In August I became a proud first time owner of my dream brand with a one owner 1997 Cadillac Deville w/Northstar 69000 miles. Drives like a dream. LOVE IT!..... In December the gleam is off the emblem. Since August the car turned into a nightmare. At first I attributed it to age, but after doing a lot of checking around listening and talking It turns out the car is most likely junk. The problems it has overheating and loosing coolant are an all too common complaint I have come to find. Northstars are not worth repairing in the opinion of almost all in this area. One Cadillac dealer in this area will not even do head gaskets on the Northstar. WOW! What a disappointment. What hurts worse is it took all we had to buy it and we don't have the money to fix it even if we wanted to or to buy another car. At least the Ford fiasco with Escort heads in the 80s were repairable. Thanks Cadillac! Mark

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Maybe next time do some research before you buy a used vehicle rather then afterward.

Respectfully, next time you buy don't blow your whole wad on the car. Put back some bucks to invest in a comprehensive extended warranty to protect yourself. It's just my opinion though.
The above post is my 2 cents....nothing more.

    Re: Northstar rebuild

In today's computer age, buying a used luxury car (even if it is a base model) without doing extensive research is, in a word, irresponsible. The information base available to someone who has a vehicle VIN in hand is staggering.

You may find out, after extensive study in here, Deville, and Northstar Performance that some or all of your problems can be repaired at less expense than you imagined.

    A few things....
    not everyone is internet literate
Cadillac is a premium brand (at a premium price, even used) and most people expect that they will be better cars.....
I 100% blame Cadillac and GM for this problem with the HG's, they knew for years that they had a problem and did nothing, thats why we (the taxpayers) own them!
No excuse will with work for this, they should have fixed them with studs back in the mid 90's on the production line.... Instead they continued to sell the public JUNK SHIT!!!

    peace
