Coolant Level

Remove this ad
If the check coolant level message displays on the information center how low is the coolant, how much needs to be added. It occured while I was driving today and drove it around another time and did not pop up. The time it happend though the engine was very cold and the message came on right when I pulled out of the school parking lot. Would the cold weather have anything to do with it? Its in the mid 20's today so it is fairly cold out.

Re: Coolant Level

I'm not exactly sure when it is tripped, but it is before it gets critical. You still have coolant in the tank. Just bring up to about 2" from the fill neck. Then keep an eye on it to figure out where it is going.

Re: Coolant Level

My car has a slight coolant leak at the radiator. (bottom hose I think, haven't crawled under to pinpoint it yet) Anyway, the "check coolant level" shows up on the DIC about every two months or so. I have a 12 oz plastic bottle I fill halfway with DexCool, the other half with distilled water, and pour the whole thing in the surge tank. Not real fancy, but it works.

Re: Coolant Level

I get this message also. It says check coolant level when its cold outside (below 20F). I popped the hood and it WAS low but after driving for 2 minutes the message went away. I pulled over into a parking lot and checked again and the coolant was at the right level. I think coolant might contract and expand depending on the temperature. this happened in my 2000 DTS a couple of times after sitting outside in cold weather over night.

Re: Coolant Level

If coolant concentration from cold temps is turning on the CHECK COOLANT LEVEL message, then the level is too low to start with.

Re: Coolant Level

Just bought some Dex-Cool and hope to change coolant this week. I'm figuring level is low and don't know when the last time it was changed(Have maintance records so I'll check them) so I think just changing it all together would be better than adding some.
