Damn, most N* make less! WTF!!!!! | The Northstar is still a great engine, but it uses that technology from the 90s when it was indeed in the Ward's list. Today many companies are following the footsteps and introducing overhead cams with multiple valves is not news anymore (N* was the first american V8 with DOHC and 32v).
It's a small V8 with a lot of punch per cubic inch. Other engines like the Hemi are larger displacement so less punch per cubic inch, but greater output overall (cubic inches win). Were it not for the "displacement on demand" technology the fuel economy would not be as good as the Northstar due to the higher displacement. |

But subjectivity apart, with the multiple displacement, the horsepower, and RWD platform... those 300Cs feel pretty powerful and agile (oops I guess this part is subjective). I had a 300 Limited rental for a few weeks, and it felt very agile and well balanced. It only had a 250hp V6. I can't imagine 350 hp on that... it must be great.
That said, I love my N*! It is more refined, due to the DOHC design vs. the pushrod Hemi. |

Damn, most N* make less! WTF!!!!! | I believe the Northstar makes more torque than those above mentioned engines. Plus it is in a FWD application and those are in RWD applications. They also rev really high which in turn gives them poor fuel economy for a V6 where as teh N* has good economy for an 8. Smoother ride etc etc. The FWD Northstar is ment to propel you around crisply and smoothly.
On the otherhand when the Northstar was moved to a RWD platform it was made more performance minded (but still reatians the smooth and crisp form it did in FWD) and given room to "breath" and such it was upped to 320hp and 310ft-lbs. That and the VVT help it along. Direct Injection in the future will give it even more power. |

The trusty old 5.7 LS1 made 325hp in the Z28's and Trans Ams, and it made up to 345 with SLP performance parts available from the factory. Eat that Hemi boy.
Bring back the 440
Why didn't they have the Z06's 7.0 V8?! That's an amazing motor! LS7 right? | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
