Head Gasket Repair - DIY?

Remove this ad
I have a 96 Eldo, just diagnosed with bad head gasket. Code PC0300 (misfire) pointed to cyl #7, plug was fouled with coolant (per shop). Shop says the GM "book" calls for an 18 hour pull-engine repair (not counting complications). Head gaskets were replaced and engine mostly rebuilt at 60K miles (now 110K) by a Cad dealer (under warranty). That time, I had overheating and lots of symptoms. Now, only the code and rough running, no overheating, and minimal coolant loss. Can I fix this without pulling the engine? I've read the threads, and removing the engine seems a foregone conclusion, but I don't have the facilities to do that. Is on-car repair doable? Thanks

Re: Head Gasket Repair - DIY?

I have heard of one or two who have done it in the car, but even they say it was more difficult and would not recomend it.

ditto on Ranger's post. Possible but VERY difficult. You better have a lot of perseverance and some skill.
