Oil Leak

Remove this ad
Hi All

Just got word from the stealership and they said that the small oil leak that my 95 SLS is from the rear main seal. They want $2800.00 to fix it. The car only has 66000 miles on it.
Has anyone ever had this problem and can you go around it by using some type of seal conditioner?
$2800.00? Are they nuts?

Re: Oil Leak

My mechanic was going to fix that on mine for 1000-1500 and it turned out to be my connectors leaking and that does cost 2000 or more.

So did you get it fix or did you find another way around it?

Re: Oil Leak

How bad is the leak? An extra quart every now and then isn't so bad.

It's not too bad. About 3 or 4 tablespoons everytime I park. I just don't like oil leaks. Many of my friends are hotroders and they say that oil leaks aren't bad, of course hotrods leak oil. They say that it's not leaking oil, it's marking it's territory.
I was hoping to find a seal softener / oil additive to help with the problem.
Any Ideas?

Re: Oil Leak

I have a bad oil pan gasket on my 99sts. I'd be very interested in an additive to see if it could slow or even fix my leak.

Re: Oil Leak

Be careful with additives. Repairs in a bottle, if effective at all, are usually nothing more than a temporary band aid.

Re: Oil Leak

And I hear they can deteriorate the seals over time, making it worse in the longrun.

Re: Oil Leak

I had a leak in my 94 sls. I put a couple of bottles of stop leak and haven't seen any more leaks. My mechanic thought it was a gasket or manifold problem. It's OK now.

Re: Oil Leak

I have had good luck with Lucas Oil Additive.I put in a quart at every oil change and it works good.It will take a couple of weeks but it seems to soften up old gaskets.

Ranger's right. They work by swelling the seals, giving the illusion that your leak is fixed, but after some time the same additives that swell your seals will also deteriorate and dry them out. The only sure fire cure for an oil leak is new seals and gaskets.
