oil pan gasket change

just wanted some opinions on doin this from others who have done it, mine is seeping around the edges and i want to replace it, tired of oil on everything under the car. doesnt look to bad but being that this is my first N* adventure i figured i would ask!! thanx

Good thing you asked... Take a look at the bolts for the oil pan next time you're down there. If I remember right, there's one or more you can't get to without removing the engine. I'm not 100% sure that's the case with the 94 Seville, so hopefully someone else will chime in here. Upon closer inspection, you may find it's not the oil pan gasket at all. Search the forums for "oil leak" and I'm sure you'll find plenty of prior postings regarding half case leaks, changing oil pan gaskets, finding leaks, etc. that will help you out here. I think user PJS just did his own engine remove/reinstall for similar leaks on his 95 SLS, so look for posts from him in particular for good info.

You cannot get the oil pan off with the engine in the car. Even with all the bolts out it willl not come out as it is trapped by the exhaust cross-under pipe.

check all the bolts to make sure that they are tight. Inspect the lower end carefully to see if the pan is the true oil leak source. Other leaks from the filter , cooler lines, oil filter adapter, etc.. drip down onto the pan/oil manifold joint and make it look like the oil pan when it really isn't.

thanks for the info i will check the torque on the bolts and hopefully that will cure the problem, its not bad enough to deem removing the engine just a nuisance leak!!

also have you guys ever seen the power steering rack come loose?? seems like mine is loose and it lossens the power steering line after a while, kind of an odd problem, i havent dug any deeper on it yet as the car gets new tires today i plan to tackle it soon though

The torque on the oil pan bolts is 10NM or 89 in/lb. There is an oil distribution manifold between the block and the oil pan. I thought my oil pan was leaking, I tightened up the bolts...it made the leak worse, the oil manifold was leaking as well as the oil pan. Once pulled the engine and replaced the oil pan gasket and buttoned it back up, it leaked worse than originally because the seal on the block side of the oil manifold was toast.
Clean the pan and manifold edges real good w/ some carb cleaner and a rag, start the car and then verify where it's leaking from.

Actually, GM released a bulletin that requires all pan bolts be removed ( one at a time ) and cleaned. Then reinstall using loctite blue thread sealant. I have seen this work.
