I agree, 10W-30 seems to be the best compromise. I've been using Mobil 1 10W-30 but the price for this oil is getting crazy ($30) for 5 qt jug. I just bought 12 one gal jugs (2 cases) of Rotella 10W-30 for $9.99 a gal. I think $2.50 a qt is more reasonable then the $6.00 for Mobil 1. My research shows Rotella has as much if not more ZDDP then Mobil 1, even with the CJ-4 rating.

Yeah, that's right. He's fun to get going. He got cranked up on the Havoline thread.

Re: 5-w30 in 99 N* ??

A lot of people on the oil board report that their engine sounds louder with Mobil 1. My decrepit old work van wouldn't know how to run on such good stuff, but the engine is quieter when I have Valvoline Max Life in it. I put Max Life 10w-30 in my mother's '99 last year also, it didn't make noise to begin with but the oil consumption was lessened somewhat.
10w has greater film strength than 5w, which is important to minimize cam and lifter wear on the flat tappets, or so I was told by the guru.
5w should only be used in a pre-2000 N* if the weather is going to be real cold for a long time.

Re: 5-w30 in 99 N* ??

I've ran mobil 1 for a number of years now. Been using 5w-30 in the eldo and IMO it's too loud. I switched to 10w-30 and it's definately better. But all in all I'm not too happy with mobil one anymore. There are so many other good products now..

This next oil change I'm going to go with...?

btw: If it's truely a lifter tic. Fill the crank case with a 50/50 mix of kerosene and high detergent straight 30weight. New filter. Let it idle for 15-20 minutes (do NOT drive it) Change the oil/filter and drive for about 100 miles. If there is no change.. then really ought to repair it. If it's gone or mostly gone.. change the oil and filter again and call it good. Sounds a little old school (which it is). But it works.

Rich

It's only one UOA of one oil in one vehicle and not a Cadillac, but I got a used oil analysis of Mobil 1 Truck & SUV oil after 5000 miles in my Sport Trac and it was awful. Critical wear metals were way, WAY too high. UOA's with Pennzoil Platinum and even Motorcraft Synthetic Blend were much better.
