Northstar Engines and System Technical Discussion Discussion, Alternator Removal?? in Cadillac Engine Discussion; I have a 98 STS and the service manual is saying that I have to remove the radiator AND the ...
Not sure on this body but the Rora says same in FSM and I get them out
by just removing the upper radiator hose. Slide it up to the top on the other end of radiator and out by the water pump.
Use a piece of carboard to protect the radiator from gouging.
Automobile(s): '93 STS (sold), now looking for a CTS Wagon soon!!

Is there an easier way? I could probably stomach removing the rad, but I don't want to go through the pain of disconnecting AC lines and recharging the system just to get the alternator out.
If your STS is anything like my '93 STS, there is a 4-bolt access plate directly below the Alternator. By removing the R/F wheel, and removing the plastic fenderwells, ( sounds worse than it is ) your ability to loosen the A/C, to get at the Alternator bolts may be all you need, but I know ( as in my car) you can drop the 'nator down. When the job is finished, make SURE the wire is not near the fan!! Use tie-wraps if needed.
My suggestion> Go to your friendly Cadillac Dealer Service ...go straight to the service mechanics! They will tell you.
By the way, I had my Alternator Hand-Re-Done by the best shop, ....it shouldn't ever have to come out!
I don't recall ever having to remove a radiator to get an alternator out.
Hang on let me look it up....
Hmmm... service manual does call for radiator and condensor removal.
That probably has one of those crazy alternators with coolant running through it doesn't it?
I am guessing it might be right, I don't recall ever having to replace one of those so I am not sure.
