    Oil Life Monitor

I know, not another oil question. But here goes anyway. I have always read that I should trust the OLM, and change the oil when it is at or near 10 - 5%. I also read that most drivers are getting about 7,000 miles according to th OLM. But, what if my cars OLM is set on a 10,000 - 11,000 range? I bought my car with 50,040 miles, and did the first change at about 58,000, while the OLM still read at about 23%. I am now at 64,500, and the OLM is at about 48%. Can regular plain old dino oil last to 10 - 11,000 miles? Thanks in advance.

I think in 2000 they increased it to 12,500 because of the roller followers thus reducing the shearing effect of the old style lifters on the oil. I am sure GM and the oil companies did plenty of research to be sure it could last that long. They don't make any money replacing engines.

The conventional oils can easily last that long under ideal driving conditions....which is the only time the oil life monitor will actually count down to 0% at 12,500 miles on your car. The oil life monitor was developed considering conventional oils (since that is what is recommended for your engine) so it is accurate for them, yes.

Thank you BBob. I always knew that oil would last past 3-5,000 miles. I just wasn't sure of 10k +.

I still use Mobil 1. You can't be too careful with these things.
I changed my dad's at 8000 miles and got a UOA that was pretty good. OLM was down to 16%.
