    Northstar engine questions from Finland

hello! What do you think about Northstar-engines, what kind of excperience do you have about? I have had two Cadillacs with Northstar-system and some people have said to me that this engine last about 200.000 km and will be worn out then and is a disposable engine.

    Re: Northstar

Perfectly good engine - just like any other piece of machinery it will have some parts that need replacement over its lifetime and, if you run it past 250,000 km it will probably need overhaul. We have members in this forum that have over 400,000 km on their engines with little more than normal wear-and-tear maintenance repairs.

If an engine, any engine, has a rough idle, something needs to be repaired.

Start your own thread in the proper forum, (what model do you have?).

    Re: Northstar

The Northstar's Achilles heel is the head gaskets (more so on the pre-2000 engines). It is an expensive and labor intensive repair. That said, it is FAR from a throw away engine and will almost never "wear out".

Here are a couple of pictures of 130K and 170K cylinder walls. Do they look worn out to you? They still have the factory cross hatch hone pattern in them. Timing chains last forever as well as the bearings and even when the HG's do fail, the heads never need machining.

Take care of the engine and it will more than return the favor.

    Re: Northstar

There's a member here who has a Deville with more than 976000km (610000mi) on the original drivetrain. Hardly a disposable after 200000km, isn't it?

Re: Northstar engine questions from Finland

Thank you for your answers. This Cadillac Deville 1996 gives the best ride I ever owned. Drove only american cars, many different, since 1988 here in cold and snowy Finland.

Re: Northstar engine questions from Finland

ninafromfinland, many members here in North America live in a cold/cool climate and always ask about winter engine oils and block heater devices. What do you do for your vehicles during the worst cold weather ??

My wife's mother, Ealien (Ellina) Ohtonen, was a direct immigrant from Finland to Northern Michigan many years ago. She spoke no English at 12 and eventually worked a full career for NASA as an orbital mathematician on the Mercury and Apollo space projects.
