EGR valve removal.. need a bit of help

    EGR valve removal.. need a bit of help

    Attached is a pic of my problem, sorry my camera is blurry at that close range. The fuel line brace that is above the head of one EGR bolt is under a black piece of metal. It's hard to see, the black piece I'm talking about is what is blocking the shiney fuel line. I'm pointing at it with a screwdriver from the top. What is it and more important how do I get the damn thing out of my way?

    Thanks for the help.. need my car for school on Monday so I hope to have it fixed by then.

    Maybe it's what I described in my first post :rolleyes2

    Damn thing can't be pulled up off the stud with that black piece in the way and it can't be pushed sideways out from under it because the stud keeps it from going far enough sideways.

    OK I got it off. It's not quite what I'd expected. First off, this thing in the pic IS the EGR valve, right?? Is there any way to test it outside of the car? Should I be able to push in the valve face that covers the second hole on the bottom or no? I'm already fed up with this damn thing.

    Yep, that's the EGR. I don't think you can test it off the car, since I think it's a variable opening solenoid... The 'valve face' aka pintle should retract when you push on it. It shouldn't take very much force at all to open.... Less than it takes to slide a roll of pennies across the floor. If you have to push hard, or it gets stuck open or closed, you'll have to remove the carbon on it. There's a couple of threads on that if you search....... Basically you just use some throttle body cleaner and a tooth brush.

    btw- what did the 'black metal thing' end up to be?? I've never seen/heard of anything blocking the egr stud before...

    It was blocking the fuel line and the bracket to which the fuel line is/was attached. I ended up bending the hell out of the fuel line bracket to get it out of the way.

    It took several good hits with a rubber mallet on a screwdriver to get it to open. It's probably past cleaning and I'm probably out $140. Is there any way to seperate the cast base from the cylindrical upper piece?

    I knew I didn't clean it well enough but I put it back on anyway since it's easy now that the bracket is out of the way . I have to drive it tomorrow and I'll try cleaning it again Tuesday which I have off.

    Anyway when I put it on and started it, the idle speed control motor (as far as I can tell without a manual anyway) started clicking and the idle was erratic for about a minute, then it evened out and has been ok since. Worries me a bit though but if it doesn't happen tomorrow I'll forget about it.

    It turned out to be stuck in the closed position, which saddens me. My car only runs a 9.1 second 0-60 when it should be a 6.6. I figured maybe if it was eating exhaust from the EGR it might cause that but since it wasn't I have some other problem to blame for its slowness.
