    Question on 05+ northstar motors. Since the front of heads has the cam sprockets, does GM still use a rear mounted coolant crossover design? I am talking about the rear wheel drive cars. Like the Sts, srx?

    I don't believe so. I think the crossover and rear mounted W/P went away when the engine became longitudinally mounted.

    I think the coolant crossover has upper ports for the heads and lower ports that attach to the block? Kind of like a "K" shape. How they fit that onto the front of a rwd motor with cams/chains seems real awkward. Maybe the intake is a wet design.

    Maybe yes, maybe no - try to get to the oil pump or timing chains..................... without removing the entire throttlebody assembly, A/C and radiator systems.

    I see the pic with the front cover sort of neglects to show the end of the crankshaft?

    Those diagrams are from the external engine parts section. Further snooping in www.gmpartsgiant.com will open the internal parts diagram.

    so the front cover is hollow? or partially hollow since the waterpump mounts to the casting and coolant flows thru it and the timing chains are behind the cover and are in an oil bath.

    That's because the RWD Northstar (LH2) also got "continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides", eliminating the need for EGR.
