New Owner 93 Eldorado pic. ? about HG issues in the early Northstars

Eldorado.jpgHi everyone, I just purchased this really clean 93 Eldorado and have some questions. First the original owner said the car has never had HG issues. Are the early models better than later years when it comes to HG issues?

The car is in good shape with only 93k miles on it, but it is missing a bit and feels slugish to me. The car has not been driven much in the las 5 years so this may be part of the problem but you guys may have some other ideas of what to do and look at.

Car dosen't smoke and the oil is clean, but there is some oily carbon like residue in the overflow tank. Is this common with these cars or is it early signs of a bigger HG issue or possibly a past issue?

There are far fewer reports of head gasket issues on early northstars. I have a '94, exact same engine and mine has 133k no problems. You might be running rough because you are due for a tune up. Also you might want to clean your throttle body. Unless your car is overheating I wouldn't even worry about a head gasket.

    BTW, Pretty car!

Thanks the car is amazingly clean and not overheating so all may be well. Not sure why the coolant tank is oily, but time will tell. Car also needs a muffler I believe, its a bit loud other than that all seems well.

If you need a muffler, I suggest you go find one at pull a part. They are very expensive brand new.

I have thought about that. Will the later model exhausts fit my early car?

I just took a peek under my '94 and '98 Eldorados. Exhaust systems are different, but the mufflers themselves might be the same.

Do you have the 4.9 or 4.6 engine?, the base model has the 4.9 and the etc has the 4.6.

I have the 4.6 not sure if it's a touring or sport though apparently one has a bit more HP than the other.

If you have the Northstar 4.6 it is the Touring Coupe with 295 hp. "9" code.

It's the eldorado touring coupe, the base model like mine is an eldorado sport coupe, I couldn't see front of your car, the base model has the caddy crest on the hood
and does not have parking/fog lights , yours should have the crest in the grille and also have parking/fog lights,

Thanks, I got a great deal on the car too. Think unbelievable price and its probably less. Brand new tires and battery too. AC needs work but I can handle that. This was an R12 car must have been one of the last.

Unbelievable deals are the best kind... They are out there if you are patient! BTW, you are correct, '93 was the last year for R-12.

Good deals do come along. I just hope I don't find the HG issue as the reason why. So far everything seems to be ok other than the residue in the expansion tank. Drain and fill this weekend and see what happens.

Which Bars leak is it that I need, they have several. Is it the old tubes with the metal looking shavings that have been around forever?

Re: New Owner 93 Eldorado pic. ? about HG issues in the early Northstrars

Skip the bars stop leak. It has proven to be a bad idea on Northstars. On the earlier 4.X cars yes, but not on a Northstar. Like I said, don't let the head gaskets worry you unless you are overheating. Oily residue would be more likely to be the result of a cracked radiator than a head gasket leak. Northstars rarely mix water and oil when the head gaskets go. The early Northstars were more known for midcase and rear main seal oil leaks than head gasket problems.
