    Northstar coolant leak

Hi i have a 2000 cadillac deville and my car has started leaking coolant. When i check the leak it comes from the back of the engine......i cant seem to see were the leak is coming from since everything is cramped up under there but it seems to drip down onto the side of the oil pan and exhaust pipe, can anybody help me figure out whats leaking?????

A common leak point in that location is the two heater pipes that run along the rear head. Be advised, they are a PITA to change. You may need to lower the front of the cradle a little to give yourself a little more clearance.

while you may have a leak, the leak shouldn't be the cause of an overheat at idle, but NOT while driving.

...........and removing a valve (cam) cover will not accomplish a thing - are you talking about the silver plastic engine beauty cover ?? It's there for little other than making the engine look less like an engine. You remove that to do all sorts of checks and maintenance.

Read ALL of 89falcon's link - you need a better picture of how and why that temperature gauge moves.

    4 year old thread.

Those will not fix a head gasket issue.

Head gasket issues do not cause leaks.

    Why are you shouting?

    Re: Northstar coolant leak

One of the metal coolant tubes on back side of engine is locked into a threaded fitting, It's kind of like fuel filter quick disconnect and it is plastic. These will leak down the back side an pool up on the transmission and burn off. All you need to do is remove air filter box, xoolant resivior and remove the brackets holding the line to the side of trans. Once that is done you should be able to see the fitting the line snaps into if you can move it and it leaks it's bad and you can get a new one for about 10 bucks and if you have a short 15/16 socket and a flex head short ratchet you can get it out and replace it yourself. If don't see that line leaking then look around the back side of the water pump housing it has 4 gaskets that can go bad and usually do at about 100k to 130k miles kind of a pain to do but i was able to do it in less than 4 hours in my back yard with minimal tools. The gaskets are about 10 bucks a piece. I just did mine 3 nights ago so I hope this info helps because I know how much it cost to let a shop do the work. I'm not an expert but if anyone has questions hit me up.
