This is mostly for personal reasons. Businesswise there will be some advantages, some disadvantages.
Current location - Langton Ontario. Mid-way between Buffalo and Detroit.
October 1st we will be setting up shop in Southern Manitoba Canada. A quick explanation of location:
Directly above the center of the USA. From Kansas City, MO, directly North up I-29. Only 10 minutes into Canada from the border. Very easy to find.
My new place has 7 acres and a much larger & newer shop.
Shipments to the USA will likely be sped up. Considering the proximity to the border, I believe I'll be doing most of my shipping from within the USA. This will avoid customs clearance issues (I deal with that at the border).
I'm staying in Canada for now, but should I move again, next time it will be into the USA.
I realize I won't be getting as many cars in for HG repair and I'm prepared for that. This will also allow more time to focus on what I need to do: promote the bullet-proof repair system I developed. Also, more R&D on the Northstars.
I have sold my Ontario shop and currently I'm a tenant in the same building I used to own. This is not working out very well. It seems as though I sold the property with a warranty. Anything that goes wrong in the house; I have to hear about- even when a fuse blows.
I signed the papers on the shop in Manitoba and closing is very, very soon. I have to start preparing for a move. A big one.
The new phone number for the shop (not active until the first week of Oct.) is 204-324-6410. A toll-free number is planned. 519-875-2970 should forward to this new number for a while. My website will be up-to-date with contact info.
During the next couple of weeks, I may be on the road a lot. Ranger, I have to stop in during one of my runs out West. I applied for my passport today to cross the border (gave up my enhanced license a while ago). My cell is set up for USA / Canadian calling with no roaming charges. As long as I have cell service I will be able to take calls. 519-550-0056 is my cell # (for emergencies and orders only, please don't call this number for advice or troubleshooting - please email all inquiries that are not urgent). I have been known to receive $500 cell phone bills every month so I try to avoid using it as much as possible.
I'll be travelling with stud kits in the truck ready to ship; have internet on the fly, and can print ship labels on the road. Stud kit orders will not be delayed. They may however, ship from Ontario, Manitoba, or somewhere in the USA.
If you have a vehicle at my shop awaiting repair; this may be slightly delayed. Not by choice. I plan to get each car that is scheduled finished before I finalize the move.
I still have family in Ontario with fully equipped shops and occasionally I may fly in for a short vacation and might tackle a HG job or two at that time....
Keeping more than one shop open was not going to happen. The guy I had lined up for that bailed on me; and also I want to be 100% positive the work is getting done correctly. On the other hand; I am working on a deal with CN Rail - shipping a Caddy from Toronto, ON to my shop will be around $1200 round trip- so compared to the cost of dealers, it still may be worth having the work done at my shop in Manitoba.
This is something I decided for my own personal happiness and freedom. Northstar Performance will actually prosper even more in the new location. I may even start sending my own trucks out to deliver/pick-up engines.
I was invited to a few shows; all expenses paid; one being SEMA in Las Vegas. If anyone's going; look me up- I wouldn't mind meeting some forum members.
Thanks to everyone for their support. Thank you to all of my fellow Ontarian customers; I'm leaving largely due to McGuinty's B.S. laws that violate our consitutional rights. Vote this S.O.B. out and change the Highway Traffic Act and I may someday return. I have too much life ahead of me to be jailed for driving 3 MPH over the speed limit. Another 10,000 Ontarians who were charged with this law since 2007 likely feel the same way. Such a prosperous, beautiful province gone to hell in a handbasket because some government officials forgot that we are human beings.
If you can't reach my office by phone between here and the first part of October, it's because there is a lot going on between here and Oct 1st. I will do my very best to return calls and emails ASAP. I don't purposely ignore anyone.
