Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

It is very unlikely that the crossover has cracked and is allowing coolant to seep into the intake system.

Does any coolant leak/blow from the top of the coolant surge tank?
Are you filling the surge tank to the top or (properly) halfway up, cold ?

Do a search in here and/or go to a NAPA dealer and buy the coolant/exhaust gas test kit. A Northstar with head gasket failure generally does not put coolant into the engine oil or vice versa.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

Right, it's a very very rare situation that oil and coolant can mix in the Northstar. It just can't happen unless there's a very extreme and specific HG failure.

Coolant in the crossover can not get into the intake plenum / runners, I don't think.

Now, it seems to me that if it takes an hour of city driving to overheat then we need to ask a few questions.

Whats the coolant level at the time of overheating?

What's the temp that you consider to be overheating?

Is there any coolant smell or steam under the hood?

    Let's start there.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

Is the water pump belt/tensioner system operating ? If you can depress the w/p belt more than 1/4" with a finger, something's wrong. That little 3-rib belt is only about $6, but the tensioner pulley and arm go for around $40+.

Search www.rockauto.com for parts or call Luke in Parts at Lindsay Cadillac ----------> over there.

The water pump is just below the ribbed pulley at the driver's end of the front cam cover. All alone on its own belt.

Losing that much coolant with no apparent leak is a bad sign. When your tailpipe is cold, rub your figner on the inside of it, see if there is any coolant in there. Sounds alot like a headgasket.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

the w/p belt has a little bit of play but would that make me lose all my water a day, there is no water under the car at all it parked in a garage and nothing on ground or sitting on engine when i do drive it i can see steam out the tailpipe when at a stop or idle but there is no sitting water in the exhaust system i really dont know wat to do, i am starting to thing it might be a head gasket, got a question is it possible to do the head gasket with out doing "time serts" or "hellicoils" or not and would i still have to get heads machined

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

If your car is putting out visible water vapor in the exhaust gasses during the summer you have a serious mechanical problem.

Engine, drivetrain, and cradle out from under the car. Timeserts or Norm's Inserts, no helicoils, and the heads may need a .002 - .005" cut. Valves and the rest should be OK. Fel-Pro gasket set. Lotsa work.

Plenty of pictures and advice in this forum over the past two years. Do some homework.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

you dont thing i could just take the heads off and get machined and put the serts in and be done, or would have to take the whole a frame and everything out also, do you think it would be worth doing all of this work to the car or take the temp gauge off and run the hell out of the motor, cause i can buy a new 1999 for 5900 i found at dealership with a waranty from them,

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

You can't get the heads off the engine without removing the drive train from the car. Trust us it's a lot of work.

Putting it back together without doing inserts would be like throwing the time and effort out the window.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

twojc.........Timeserts or Norm's Inserts, which are necessary to do a proper top overhaul, require some pretty dedicated, intense precision drilling and fitting. Don't forget that you have to remove and re-time a chain drive double overhead cam setup as well as seal the engine internals from all those drill chips from 20 head bolt holes. As codewize said, it's a lot of work.

Either you correct the engine problem or you part out the car. There's no middle ground. If the rest of the car is in very good to mint condition, save it. If the rest of the car is raggy, junk it.

Re: cadillac eldorado overheating but no oil in water

Pretty fast forward from USS PIPER (SS 409), 1945 built, to a late model nuclear fast attack doing an emergency surface from a quarter mile down.......I think she's USS SAN DIEGO during builder's sea trials. The feeling you get when that monster stops and falls back into the water is plain eerie. There's no propulsion involved there: it's all 4500 psi high pressure air going into the main ballast tanks.

You go to test depth, trim for neutral buoyancy, and come to ALL STOP. When SONAR and the test surface ships give the "all clear", the CO orders "Diving Officer, Emergency Surface", then 3 blasts on the diving alarm, the DO says "Chief of the Watch, Emergency Surface". The COW operates levers and switches to dump one hell of a lot of high pressure air directly into all the ballast tanks, blowing out hundreds of tons of water in seconds; nothing happens, then, ever so slowly, the digital depth gauges begin ticking upward and increasing speed until, when you reach the surface, the digits go so fast they're unreadable..........It's a hoot.

Then the guys in the engine room get to listen to 2 air compressors running for the next 8 hours recharging all the high pressure air flasks.
