Re: Everything You ever Wanted To Know About Cooling System Sealant Tabs

Just another thing to consider when using coolant sealant tabs, my water cooled alternator failed this week and the root cause was sealant tab goop was blocking coolant from flowing thru the alternator cooling circuit. The inlet/outlet ports on the alternator are only 1/4 ID and plug easily. I flushed my coolant system and will run without sealant tabs from here on.

A while back I flushed the cooling system on a just acquired '97 Northstar and refilled with Zerex G05 coolant without using any sealant tabs. Within a few days the engine starts smoking like the usual head gasket problem. Any relation to not using the tabs, or did I just flush out some block seal the previous owner put in to mask the bad head gaskets?

Any relation to not using the tabs
Absolutely none. The tabs will not, nor where they ever intended to seal or prevent a HG leak.
