For a complete rebuild that isn't bad. There is a lot more involved in that than just a head gasket fix. I'm sure that includes rod and main bearings, new rod bearing cap bolts, oil distribution plate, rear seal, mid case reseal, plus heads. But you can probably find a place to do just the head gaskets for about half that.

Again, Thanks Faded! Yes I understand that a complete job is probably worth it. I just want to get my wife's "Baby" going again. She despises driving our beat up '96 Suburban! Rippy's gave me a decent quote on just the HG's. Was trying to find a closer possiblity.... trip to Wilmington, NC possibly in my future? LF

Great thread, I have a 2008 DTS and love it. Please tell me how I would know if the water pump failed, before these other nightmarish things would start to happen that you mentioned. And please tell me what is the half-case seal, why is it going to fail.

In summary (aside from poor design) white smoke coming from the exhaust would classify the Northstar a steam engine.

Just added my vote. 1998 Deville with 80k miles. Symptoms include: Rough "putt-putt" idle at cold, faint white smoke (most notable at cold), coolant loss, pressurized coolant reservoir at cold. It isn't burning, or lossing, too much coolant, I am able to top it off every few days and it has not started to over heat--I figure it's just a matter of time though. I've had the car for slightly less than a year. Is it wrong of me to hope someone rear ends my car on the way to work?

2002 Seville SLS. About 133, 000 miles. Meticulously maintained by myself from 2004 and 50, 000 miles. Exhaust gas in the coolant and overheating. No more N*s for me.

1997 Seville SLS, 97,000 miles. Poorly maintained by the previous owner (the proverbial "little old lady") but I got it super cheap expecting a few issues and I am capable of doing all of the work myself. Ran beautifully when I bought it in December, 2012 and popped one of the HGs about a month later. Rough idle on startup and super fast pressurization of the cooling system along with a faint smell of exhaust in the surge tank. I don't think I need to block test this one.

this needs to be updated to include 2004-2005 as I had a 2005 two years ago and I have a 2004 Deville coming in this Saturday.

Joe ............ Done. Although this poll is sort of a "CF Member" input (and very unscientific) I doubt if your input (if you wish) of more recent engines will skew the results any more than they already are.

While it still appears that 1997 - 1999 are the 3 worst Northstar years, the results from other years could probably be applied to any other automotive engine on earth. No engine is immune from failed gaskets or bolts - for any number of reasons. Some of the Subaru series is a true nightmare for head gaskets.

Yea the Scooby doo's have a huge issue. But I am wondering if we are gonna start seeing more failures of the newer ones as they age

Re: Northstar Headgasket/Cracked Block/Bolt Failure? Please let us know

I dunno, Joe ........... but I try to stay neutral on the "Northstars are junk" wars. Over the years I have repaired blown head gaskets on everything from Ford flathead B-blocks to Chrysler hemi's (1950's) to MG's to Ferrari to Chevy 327's to Ford 289's to Jaguar DOHC 6's. NO engine is forever - some are for only a few days !

I don't believe the northstar is junk I think they are a awsome power plant. They just have the headgasket issue. There a lots of cars with issues that people just deal with. 4 out of 5 people think a northstar powered caddy is junk and there is no fix for it
