Yes, buit it is backwards math.

    Is a 5.0L a 305 or a 302?
    do the math.
    305 / 5 = 61
    302 / 5 = 60.4

    The # is 61
    4.6L X 61 = 280.6
    279 / 61 = 4.5737704918032786885245901639344 4.6?

    Re: how many cubic inches

I don't wanna harp on the same string in here but when doing convertions you should not straight the numbers here .
For instance : Northstar is 4565 cm3 ,if you say 4.6 you can still find the right number but not as exact as what you evalute 4565
So, according to the calculator 4,565 liter is equal to 278,511 cubic . Still right if you say 279

If you say 4,6 liter to cubic then the number is 280,646 which you can say 281

    Re: how many cubic inches

I did some calculating years ago and I usually use 61.02, but the real conversion is: 61.0237 cu. in. = 1 liter.
That would put a 4.6 at approximately 280.70902 cu. in., personally I would round that up.
However... there could be some rounding up or down going on and 2 cubic inches isn't really that much difference.
I'd say in the end, when all is said and done... why does it matter?

Your math is off more than mine

    Cylinders _ 8
    Bore _____ 3.6617 MAX
    Stroke ___ 3.3071

    Cubic Inches Displacement
    278.607

    Liters Displacement
    4.564

I cheated and used an online Engine Displacement Calculator

    Re: how many cubic inches

+ or - 2 cubic inches is not going to turn it into a AAFuel. 280 is close enough for ditchwork. Now, lets go back and remeasure all American V-8's so we can know which manufacturers used number specs in their advertising..........Metrics gets us decimal people into all sorts of trouble. Besides, 280 or 455 cu.in. sounds better than 4.6 or 7.5 liters.

    Re: how many cubic inches

If you want to get picky about it, what about the volume of the combustion chambers in the cylinder heads?

AJ, I was basing my calculations on the 4.6 liter spec, I really don't care about the bore, stroke, or any of it.
All this stroking is boring me to death!

What does the sticker on the radiator cover say? Whatever that is, is what we're calling it.

    Interesting topic though.

It was no big deal I just throw it out. I have to use a calculator for everything. So I looked up the displacement calculator and yes I could have added cc and deck height.
