thermostat starting to rise in strange way

    I have a 97 sls with like 105k.
I have noticed lately (in past 3 months) that the thermostat is starting to rise.
I have seen many that rise at stop lights and sitting in idle.
The strange thing about this is that it seems to get hot while driving.
When I put it in park, it actually slides down.
It hasn't gotten in the red yet, but it consostently gets up near 75-80%.
Has anyone else had this happen?

P.S., Im in TX and it's usually around 95+ degrees in the afternoon.

Have a block test done for exhaust gases in the coolant.
