    What Northstar do I have?

I have found a complete 1996 Northstar engine. It is out of the car. How can I tell if it is the 275 or 300 hp version? I do not have access to the car and VIN #. There is a bar code sticker on the back valve cover.

look for a pad on the block just above the case joint on the back (right) side near the timing cover. The VIN will be stamped or etched in. If you see a metal tag (early production) that is the # I need to check. Yes the valve cover code will work, but the VIN is better

Thank you for all the info. It was pulled out of a rear hit totaled car about 3 years ago. Should still run. If not guess it was worth $200 for parts.

Re: What Northstar do I have?

I have the complete Northstar and trans in cradle. VIN code:1G6KD57Y06U100044. I was going to put it in a 91 ETC, but I just picked up a 93 Allante 1G6VS3394PU126587 with 127,000 miles. Now I'm considering putting the new Northstar in the Allante and the 93 Allante's engine in the 91 ETC. What is the hoursepower of these engines? Any thoughts on the transplants?

6U100044 Just seeing the last 8 I knew that you should not have the powertrain unit!
This VIN is for a SCRAPPED 06 DTS. It was about the 40th car to roll off the line when they redesigned the car.
The car was supposed to be destroyed You can get someone in a little trouble. I know of one scenario that is some what ok, but The facility could still get in trouble.
    oh yeah a VIN Y is a 275 hp?

Re: What Northstar do I have?

Wow! Thanks, I got the engine off of eBay from a company that only deals with GM parts. I went to their yard, which by the way is huge. I think they are an official GM vendor. Anyway, based on your information, I think I should keep the 300 HP in the Allante despite the mileage and go with my original plan to put the new engine in the 91 ETC, boosting the HP by 75 HP. However, if I can somehow boost the HP of the very low mileage engine to say 325-75 HP for a reasonable price I would want to put it in the Allante'.

The ETC runs strong but has lifter noise on start-up and leaks and consumes oil, possible rear main seal and blown head gasket.

When I worked at Cadillac headquaters in the early 90s I saw and rode in Eldorados that the Northstars where tested in. This cradle of this Y engine seams different from the one in the 91 ETC. I know the engine mount was updated but the cradle looks longer. My plan was to drop the old one and bolt up the Y, swap out the ECM and get a harnes extention. My concern about the cradle and desire to put a team together so I can video the project and put it on my website: http://www.beastkillercars.com, has kept me from moving ahead. In the meantime, I found the Allante. What do you think?

I will up-load new photos latter today
