my '88 4100 now and then gives me the engine system fault error.
the 046 is the code for an imbalance between right and left banks.
never does it when it is cold. it always happens after driving some,
and often (but not always) i can shut down the engine, restart it,
and it goes away. sometimes i drive her 2 miles and it happens,
sometimes it takes 25 miles, sometimes after a full day of driving.
there is no telling when.
sometimes it goes for days w/o the error, then it hits again.
everytime i try to diagnose, the error goes away before i can get into the diag.
i could ignore it, but if the error lights up during a SMOG test, they are going to fail it.
exhaust is clean, no smell at all.
am i faced with replacing O2 sensors, injectors, wires, plugs, distributor .. blindly?
can the intake manifold act off and on like this?
along with the 046, there is another code in the history.
i think it is 049, will check it in a few mintues.
any help from those that have lived this in ANY Caddy, ANY model,
would be appreciated.

Re: engine system fault E046
CURRENT means the fault still exists, HISTORY means the fault no longer exists. If the fault is current it will remain until diagnostics are done and repairs are performed. Then it will still be there but as a history code unless its erased at the time of repair. There are many reasons for this code from poor electrical connections to component failure. A factory service manual is very important to have and follow before parts are thrown at this code. The car running has nothing to do with priority of the codes. Until its fixed the code will remain current.
I am having the same issue, I've replaced my injectors with some used ones from a similar year deville (I have a 91 Seville). And that really helped with my original problem of the car running horribly. It turns out that 5 injectors were not working. Can someone email me the diagnostics troubleshooting procedure for this error code?
