    4.9 EGR Removal???

OK..My '91 Seville set a code and I finally had a chance to get it pulled. Just as I suspected, The EGR is bad. Now for the big question....How do you get it off??? The TPS and fuel rails are in the way. Please tell me there's a tool I can get to the two bolts with without having to dissassemble everything. Thanks for your help!

I took a cheap combo wrench, 12mm (?) IIRC, heated the area near the box end with propane, then bent to 90 degrees. Tossed it into water to quench. Turned it by grabbing the long end with vice grips. Works just fine.
    FWIW
    YMMV

Nothing is wrong with removing throttle body to get better access to the EGR solenoid either. You will have a chance to inspect/clean TB and see if the vacuum lines are okay. Make sure to replace the gasket of the EGR valve. The two bolts holding the latter are 13 mm.

Oops...I ment EGR valve, not the solenoid.

I replaced mine, it wasn't too bad.

IIRC I had the throttle body off at the time... I think that may be why it was easy.

I used a distributer wrench that I bought at Sears. I believe it was for a Ford engine, but worked great for 4.9 EGRs!

Thanks for the replies guys. I followed HUF's lead and just removed the throttle body. Removed the EGR with no problem. It's like they built everything around that EGR! Thanks again for the help!

    Re: 4.9 EGR Removal???

Just for the benefit of others reading this thread....4.9L 1992 Eldorado

Normally the EGR will not set a code until it is completely shot. The first signs of a suspect EGR or EGR solenoid are pinging under light acceleration. And of course high emssions at the test facility.

I tested my EGR solenoid first when I experienced pinging under light acceleration. It only did this when the engine was warm and after maybe five or six miles of driving time. Once the engine was at normal operating temperature it would ping all the time under light acceleration. Fuel consumption (mileage) was not affected that I am aware of. By the way, my car passed Texas emissions test with the pinging at warm engine. The car was cold when tested because it sat overnight at the facility. They (the facility) could not get to it the day I took the car in for testing.

So why change the EGR if it passed emissions? Believe it or not, you really do need it to work properly and mind did not. And yes, I checked all the vacuum tubes, crazy ells, and such to find them in good condition. I also checked the ignition timing, ISC, and TPS to ensure they were to factory specification. They were.

I really did not think the EGR was bad. I was convinced there was a leak or some other problem. Once I had eliminated all the other suspect parts, I replaced the EGR valve assembly. I used a 13MM distributor wrench to remove the bolts and replace the EGR and gasket.

I am happy to report that the ping is gone.

if you read the fsm, there is a way that works better!
set the computer for "export" , there is an option for egr not installed, while you are at it, also turn off the unleaded fuel only light, and door ajar messages, and a few others!!! if you want to
use the gasket as a template for the block off plate, have done this for 3 vehicles, they all ran better after!!

Leaving alone the "they all ran better after" statement for a while... How did you set the computer for "export"? What car are you talking about?

Well...let me guess (what else we can do? LOL).... FSM for 91 Seville/Eldorado page 8D-10. There is something about Export displays Disable, but nothing EGR -related. Please clarify where did you get EGR disable option.
