    88 deville bubbling

I have an 88 Seville and it is gently "bubbling" (more of a water flow than air) in the overflow while idling. When you increase the rpm, it seems to stop. It pushes water into the overflow but won't suck it out. Does that seem to be a hg? It does have some water in the oil. Thanks

Yes, most likely a head gasket.

It's repairable, but due to the aluminum block, the head bolt threads will need to be repaired after head bolt removal. Unfortunately, the job is not as simple as R&R'ing the gasket.

Yes, its aluminum. You might try a new radiator cap. A weak cap will allow it to boil prematurely and will not allow fluid to be sucked back into the radiator. You say you have water in the oil? is that on the dipstick or oil fill cap?

The water is in the pan, made it thick and sludgey on the dipstick. It's not gray or milky though. Just about a quart over full.

This engine was famous for intake gaskets failing much more so than head gaskets. An intake gasket failure will dump coolant directly into the oil pan. Left unrepaired, it will wipe out the cam, lifters and main bearings! Drain the oil and verify its coolant/ water. report back.

Or, for a no-nonsense confirmation, test the coolant for exhaust gases. Many cheap kits available at the local auto parts store.

Given the symptoms, this would be a strange coincidence of multiple problems occuring at the same time for it not to be a head gasket - but anything's possible.

I wouldn't run it at all with a quart of coolant in the pan. It doesn't take much to screw up your bearings. I guess I would test the coolant first to determine how the coolant is getting in the oil. If it is the head gasket I wouldn't fix it, I would look for another engine.
