I just replaced the whole power antenna unit on my 83 with a used one I located at a local U-PULL yard. Simply mark the passengers side hood hinge (at hood and fender) and remove, be careful none of the fender mount shims drop down into the fender cavity and are returned for proper hood alignment. Note: A fully retracted antenna indicates a good chance the unit is operational. Good luck.

And put a thick blanket on the wiper cowl so as to not damage it and rest the hood there and put a pair of vise grips on the chrome shaft of the left hood gas support to hold the hood up. I even use a broom stick to help support the hood on the passenger side. The antenna assembly must be rotated just so to get it out of the fender and by the way cut off the extended mast before removal. Replace the whole assembly.
