    Re: 4.1,4.5,4.9..Which You Prefer?

Being a novice when it comes to new Cadillacs (I have a 55 Coupe de Ville) , my question is:

Is the 4.5L engine in my 1992 Allante, a HT4?00 engine of any type? What does the "HT" represent, high torque?

    Thanks -

HT is 'high technology'. The engines that followed didnt have the HT in the name. You have a modified 4.5 with 200hp over the standard 4.5 with 180.

So then, I do NOT have a HT anything engine? Thanks for educating me.

You have the HT 4.5 with an Allante-specific intake manifold

They didnt use the HT designation after the 4.1 because they didn't want people to associate the 4.5 with the gasket issues that the 4.1 was notorious for. The issues that made the 4.1 one of the top 10 worst engines of all time did not carry on to the 4.5 and 4.9.

The High Tech moniker was sure some name to hang on a POS like a 4.1 !! Engineering dept must have been breaking their arms patting themselves on the back to tack a name like that on an engine. The last good Caddy engine IMO is the 472/500 series. Northstars are like what we have here except with OHC, which adds even more crap to deal with.
Standard of the world? I don't think so. That description fits a Chevy small block better.
The 4.9 does seem to be the best of the 4.xx series from what I read on here.

So to answer your question, yes, all 4.1, 4.5 and 4.9 engines are from the "HT" family, and are very similar in basic design. As stated, the 4.5 and 4.9 did not carry the name and did not inherit many of the 4.1's notorious problems.

Amen to that! The SBC and the SBF ftw. I sure miss being able to see BOTH sides of my engine!

Similar to the news story I heard this morning. Cadillac, with the knowledge and approval of its parent, is officially distancing itself from GM. The theory is the GM name does not connote "luxury," by removing the GM logo from its literature and displays. Cadillac does not want its customer base thinking GM. This is a Cadillac effort to avoid having to deal with GM's baggage!

Yup. Like I said, that's how it was given to me. As far as I know, it's still the original ecm.

Kind of like Lexus owners don't know they drive a Toyota. Knew a Lexus tech once who had to hide toyota parts boxes from customers because they would throw a fit if they saw them. I think Toyota uses Lexus as an experiment for their new technology to see if it works before putting it in their Toyotas.

Getting ready to put my 4.9 back in after HG replacement.

Still has some minor parts to put back on, but for the most part ready to go...

No, just engine paint; but some 4 to 5 coats.

Looking for the home to some random bracket; I may need help to find it...

The cast was so bad on the bottom fins (below the "V8 PFI") that I just dremeled them off and smoothed over the valve cover.
