| Re: 84 Eldorado Transmission Problems By saying the trans goes into overdrive, do you mean it has no power and will not shift leaving a stop sign? When the solenoid fails, it will usually cause the car to shudder and almost stall as you come slowly to a stop after being above 60 MPH. Then as you leave the stop sign, it will shift early and harshly and shudder again. If it takes off normally from a stop and does not shift, it can be a stripped gear on the governor assembly. The solenoid is located in the trans. Once the trans oil pan is removed, you will see it in the top left corner of the valve body. There is a wiring harness that plugs onto it. The governor is accessed by removing 2 bolts holding the cover over it at the speedo gear end where the speedo cable attaches to the trans below the steering column. Remove the bolts and simply lift the cover off, then lift out the governor assembly. It will be obvious if the plastic gear is stripped or not. My personal experience with a failed overdrive solenoid is the trans works normally until the car is driven above 60 MPH, then the solenoid engages and will not release coming to a stop. Feels like a stick shift car shuddering because you haven't depressed the clutch pedal. |
