removing oil pan on RWD 4.1

Remove this ad
it's been a long time since I posted here, i almost feel like a stranger

anyways, my '85 brougham is down. its been down for a long time i havn't had any time to fix it. Im trying to get the oil pan off and theres some kind of gooey gasket thats holding it on... all the bolts are out of it and it doesnt seem like it will pry off very easily. is there anything else i should take off besides the oil pan when i get it off? exhaust, starter, etc? the dust cover is already off.

thanks guys

Re: removing oil pan on RWD 4.1

Sometimes I tap on the side of the pan with a rubber mallet to break it loose. I'm surprised there is room to get it out because there usually isn't on RWD GM's

Re: removing oil pan on RWD 4.1

I would think you'll have to un-bolt the mounts and jack the engine a bit, to get the front of it up enough to clear the crank when removing the pan. If you do raise the engine, make sure the distributor and other things are not against the firewall. Don't remember how close the distributor is, but removing the cap to prevent breaking it would help if it's close.
