    Question Harmonic balancer 83 Fwd In-Line 4.1

ok my harmonic balancer and pulley are fastened by 4 screws take them off
then the pulley, harmonic ballancer pull right off and im left with a keyed hub
pressed onto crankshaft i can tell this hub is going to be a tough one to
remove my question is on installing do i need the same bolt as suggested in
other topics m18 x 1.5 by about 3.5 inches and presently mine has no bolt
securing it in the middle is there supposed to be one or is this press fit only?
could it hurt to put one in there?

and on another note should i replace my fan with one without a cluch on it?

    thanks again

upon further examination im thinking it might be a m16x2.0 but i still dont know

I had the same question about reinstalling the hub on the crankshaft after replacing my timing gears and chain. I followed the book and just reinstalled it assuming it was a press fit. My crankshaft didn't have any threads in it to use a bolt. After about 300 miles I was rechecking the belt tightness and looking for oil leaks around the timing cover when I noticed the lower pulley was almost off of the crank. I would up drilling and tapping the crankshaft to install the bolt and GM washer to keep the damn thing together. Scared the beejammers out of me considering the damage that pulley would have wrought if it flew off. I would recommend installing the bolt and go to GM to get the correct washer for it. Regular washers won't work properly. Just my experience.

The hub is a press on item. The press alone should be fine. If a hub comes loose it must not have been fully pressed on.... The cranks were all threaded for a puller to install the hib in service to my recollection. The cork was just stuck into the threads to keep dirt out. It is amazing how long those little corks will stay in there...LOL

You can add a bolt to hold the hub if you like but it really shouldn't be necessary if you use the proper threaded puller to install the hub onto the crank.
