ok the car is running awesome with the belt off. But as soon as I put that thing on the belt tensioner moves up and down and makes a very loud knocking noise. Now I checked every pulley. The water pump pulley bolts are loose. So I tightened them down. Put the belt back on and they came loose. Did it again, same thing happened. Now further looking at the pulley shows that the holes are alot bigger than they should be. it looks like the pulley tried to move but the belt wouldn't let it and made the holes bigger. the water pump spins freely, do I need to replace the water pump because of the mounting holes for the pulley as well as the pulley? And would this cause the loud noise and the belt tensioner to go crazy?

If the holes in the pulley are too large, I assume the pulley will not remain centered and the tensioner would have to compensate for the ever-changing belt tension as the pulley turns. I would bet the water pump is fine, but the pulley needs to be replaced.... Am I correct that there is no center shaft that would keep the pulley centered even though the bolt holes appear to be over-sized? Or is that hole enlarged as well? What a strange problem!
