Unhappy Replacing Water Pump Too Often

Hey, hows it going, first time posting in this forum. Anyways I have a 91 Eldorado with 195,000 miles, and in the past 3 years, I have had to change the water pump 2 times... soon to be three because its rattling fairly loudly, and I'm sure it will seize up soon. The first time I changed it I used a brand new genuine GM part, second time, a rebuilt one from NAPA auto parts I believe, either way it was a 6 month warranty. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to not make this a yearly ritual. Thanks !!

Use the OEM water pump. They have been proven to be much more durable than the aftermarket replacements. Don't know why you had trouble with the OEM pump the first time...but you'll definitely be replacing afermarket pumps frequently on that engine.

Are you always refreshing the cooling system with fresh coolant and using the GM coolant supplement in the system?? What kind of coolant are you using? It should be the conventional green silicated coolant. If you are using some sort of Heavy Duty silicated coolant (typically found at truck stops) then that could be causing the water pump seal to fail rapidly and then that takes out the bearing as the coolant seeping past contaminates the bearing. Use conventional green coolant that is automotive coolant.

I have the same car and problem.I went through three water pumps in two years because the mechanic was using the wrong tool to install the pump.Make sure who ever works on the pump again uses a cadillac water pump removal tool..otherwise you'll be needing a new pump again.

Thats a new one for me, I've replaced a water pump on nearly every 4.x motor that I have owned. What the heck is a "Cadillac water pump removal tool" 10mm , 15mm & T45 sockets are all I have ever required (OK maybe I needed a 13mm as well)

I think you and others are confusing the water pump removal tool required for the NORTHSTAR engine. The Northstar needs a special tool to remove the water pump cartridge from the water crossover casting. There are no special tools required for the water pump on the 4.1/4.5/4.9 engine. Normal hand tools are sufficient to change the 4.x water pumps.

What coolant are you using...??? If you are using a heavy duty silicated coolant or "long life" silicated (green) coolant then that may be the problem.. The excessive silicates in the heavy duty truck long life silicated coolants can cause the pump seals to fail quickly. Use the conventional green silicated coolants for automobiles for the best pump seal life.
