Unhappy Won't start when hot (intermittent)

Our 93 SDV with 4.9 will occaisionally not start when hot. Wait till completely cold and it starts and runs fine. Good for several days. Then re-occured more recently. Re-started after 20 minutes and drove 4 blocks and stalled while running. Previous problems were only a no-start hot. This was a stall while running.Went back after 4 hours and it started and ran normally. The only code it shows is 12 - No Distributor Signal. The car runs again now, expecting it to re-occur. How do I avoid throwing a whole string of parts at it to fix this? Thanks for any help.

It's going to be the ignition module, wiring thereto, or the PCM. Because the problem is most pronounced when hot, best guess is the ignition module.

On these engines, it's likely the hall effect sensor (I think the module was gone by 1991 or so, but I could be wrong).

I would replace the distributor instead of playing with it's components.

Ignition module was used in all the 4.X engines. Don't know about the Ns, never will.

Thumbs up Re: Won't start when hot (intermittent)

    Autozone lists the
    Ignition module for 19.99,
the pickup coil for 40.99, and
the Hall effect switch for 43.99.

They say the module can be changed in the car, but the distributor has to come out to change the other two, so I'm going to start with the module as the first step.

Thanks for your help here. Appreciate it.

Re: Won't start when hot (intermittent)

Be aware that here have been posts here and there about premature failure of AZ modules. When my original module failed, mercifully right in the driveway, I replaced it with a Standard Products brand as it was Sunday and that was all there was available. OK so far after about three years.
