I like the 4.9, MUCH easier to work on. I don't like the flag waving..... we are NOT united!

    Peace,
    D.

are you talking about the american flag i suppose?? why would you post some extra info like that, that ppl will take offense to? there's probably more to it than i understand though... like an inside thing??

    anyhow, i like my 4-9, but i'd trade it for a N*.

    Re: 4.9 Vs Northstar

I'll take the 4-9, much easier to work on in my opinion. Never actually worked on a N* but from the way it looks, seems like you'd have to tear apart the whole top of the engine just to get to a simple part.
The 4.9 is also more reliable from what i've been reading on this forum and hearing from other people.
When I had my ETC I guess it looked more like a 95 and up so people used to ask me if I had the N* and I said 4.9 and they'd say thats even better.
I like the performance of this engine in a luxury car,
    good motor.

    Re: 4.9 Vs Northstar

I own cars with both engines. Both engines are easy to work on but the Northstar is a little easier on several key items including spark plugs, water pump and starter. From the reliability standpoint, the 4.9 wins hands down because of the head gasket issues on the Northstar. However, once a Northstar is timeserted, that issue becomes a non issue. The Northstar has a lot more passing power but with regular driving, the 4.9 is feels just as powerful.

The answer to this question is absolutely clear:

    For Dependability, the 4.9 wins.
    For Performance, the N* wins.

In addition to the HG's, the early Northstars suffered from bad crank sensors...2 of 'em.

I've owned two 1994 Sedan Deville', one with a Northstar, and one with a 4.9. Off the line, the 4.9 is great, but overall, the Northstar is a much more fun engine to throttle hard!
As for working on the engines, both suck because they are transverse! Give me back my old Caddys with the big blocks!

Have you ever driven a Northstar powered Deville? It's a different animal!

i can never let a N* bash thread go
    you should know that
its all in good faith though

the N* is the performer there no arguing that
maintenance is a toss up, i prefer the N* over working on a 4.9 but others have different options
cost of maintenance though obviously goes to the 4.9

I have $50 that says my 4.9 DeVille will promptly beat down any N* DeVille on the east coast.

Unless said Northstar has a 100 shot or better.

4.9's have better performance potential, you just have to know how to use them.

    Re: 4.9 Vs Northstar

ghost c knows performance tricks that a lot of people on this forum dont.
both engines have potential to be great performers, you just have to know how to extract the power.
As far as comparing a 32 valve engine to a 16 valve engine in terms of performance, we all know whos the performer there but i'd still rather have the 4-9 simply because of reliability.
i would really like to see a stock for stock street race between the 2. I want to see where exactly the N* starts pulling off and how much faster the N* is on the freeway say from about 65.
