    Water pumps...Generally speaking.

Generally speaking and on average from experience, What have any of you here seen as to about how long the life span is of O.E. water pump on the 4.9?

My 1993 Deville was dripping some coolant where it collected around the bottom of the radiator mount frame on the fill cap side.

I looked around and saw no leak from overflow tube, No leak from cap or any of the hoses or lines to the radiator. Sipe panel of radiator on cap side was a little wet but cant see any cracks. Was wondering if the water pump may be starting to pass coolant and it whipped it on to the radiator where it was wet. My radiator was down about a pint after always being neck full when i checked. overflow bottle empty also.

The plastic side tanks are known to crack. A crack will open up as the radiator gets hot. Examine carefully the side tanks for the traces of dried out coolant.

Thanks HUF. I imagine these cracks could be hairline?, Because i see nothing visible except the one time seeing the side wet with coolant.

P.S. If it is a crack....could this be fixed or is it just time for new radiator?

On my 1993 Eldorado (4.9L), the OE water pump lasted 90k, the Napa Reman water pump lasted 100k.

I've found the best way to find a leak is by using a coolant system pressurizer. Simply hand pump the system to 15psi w/ the engine off and look for leaks....better yet, listen for bubbling. I've found everything from loose hose clamps to loose water pump bolts to a slight crack in the radiator by the trans cooler inlet. The pressurizer can be borrowed from AutoZone for $75....the $75 is returned when you return the tool to the store.

I'd say waterpump life on a 4.9 is anywhere between 60k and 100k miles.

There is no fix. Replacing the radiator with an aftermarket inexpensive one`is the way to go. I replaced the both side tanks, retainig the original core. Was not worth the time.

My 1993 Deville had 298,000 miles. I replaced the pump twice in that time.

My '93 CDV ' original waterpump had a bad bearing at 70,000 miles. The one on my '94 Deville was replaced by the previous owner at around 90,000 miles.

is there alot of serpentine noise with a bad water pump? I cant determine if my noise is related to power steering pump or water pump . I already replaced the belt tensor and second idler wheel. Spun the power steering and water pump without the belt and couldnt tell if they were bad.
