    Water Pump Removal

My brother has a '82 Deville - HT4100 and it seemed to be leaking coolant from between the water pump and thermostat housing. It looked like it was impossible to remove the thermostat housing without removing the entire water pump, so... We removed the alternator & bracket, AC compressor, fan, shroud & crank pulley but there's 2 water pump bolts under the power steering pump pulley and we can't figure out how to get to them or even get the power steering pump off without removing the pulley first. I've read here on the forums that the power steering pump pulley is pressed on and a special puller is required to remove it. Do we need to go this route or is there a better way? If we're able to locate the special puller and manage to get the pulley removed, is there another special tool required to press it back on?

If I recall correctly, there are three holes in the PS pulley. Turn the pulley to get the one of the holes to line up with the bolt you are trying to remove. At least thats what I think I remember.

Those holes weren't present till approx 1985. So, yes you need the puller. Should be able to be rented from a tool rental outfit. That same puller enables you to press the pulley back on. Be aware the thermostat housing is an assemby that uses three O rings that can be the true leak. A Cad dealer should be able to provide the kit to reseal the thermostat housing. Maybe you dont need the water pump??

    Re: Water Pump Removal

Thanks for the help and tips, I located a puller and removed the pulley so I could get the water pump off. It looks like the o-ring between the water pump and thermostat housing was the culprit as it was flattened on one side and had rust/lime buildup where it had been leaking.

    Thanks again.

My 84 Eldo has no holes? so yours was probably updated. Or a replacement pump was installed in the past? You are lucky!!
