hey guys, i got a 93 cad deville, i was wondering if anyone could help me bump up the timing 3 degrees, i live in california and for the life of me i cannot find the timing rail thing, i looked all over and can't find it, i was talking to a friend of mine and he said thats the california emissions, they don't want you messing w/the timing so they take it off! WTF? so is there anyway else to change it without having that rail? help!
Take a timing light and put it on number one spark plug wire.
Go to the ALDL connector (the diagnsotic connector) that is under the dash beside the steering column. Connect pins A and B with a jumper wire. At idle in park with the AC off and NOT in the onboard diagnostics mode the engine will be at fixed spark with A and B connected.
In fixed spark mode the ECM will command a fixed 10 degrees of spark advance. Use the timing light to look at the damper and the timing tab on the water pump. It should be at 10 degrees BTDC. Loosen the distributor clamp and turn the distributor to get 13 BTDC if that is what you want.
that'd mean that they manufacture the water pumps without timing tabs, because that's where it is! And, there is a tab... how would you, or a shop ever even check the timing? Just look again... it's a little triangle on the H2O pump right above the crank where the marks are.
see, the problem i have is there is NO timing tab. I was told by a friend that in california, they take the tab off so you can't mess with the car's timing.so theres no other way to do this?
Basically, they were feeding you BS. Did you look under the hood or can't you pry yourself away from your computer...??? The timing tab is part of the water pump stamping on the OEM pumps and there were not any "california specific" water pumps installed on those engines. Open the hood and check it out.
