A 4.X Water Pump Story - Not for the Faint of Heart

Just finished the water pump on my '87 HT 4100. It was a bit more challenge than I envisioned. You can read the whole bloody saga on my blog if you like:

    Wow--

There's always that one bolt, isn't there? Glad your car is working again.

I say this while knocking on wood, but I'd be very surprised if there's much left to fail on your car, given that you've already replaced the alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, and EGR system components. Despite the occasional issue (I've replaced my alternator and EGR valve thus far), my 4.1L Cadillac has been uber-reliable. I also finally traced my hesitation problem to a plugged breather and sticky valves which I've half cured by spraying carb. cleaner on the valves while the engine is running. I still need to remove the back valve cover and perform this treatment. You may want to try something similar next time you have the valve covers off. I think a varnish built up on the valves/guides when the intake gaskets blew which was causing a few valves to stick open at higher RPMs.

Best of luck with your 4.1 Cadillac.

Yeah, I had that same problem. When I replaced the torx bolt, I used a standard bolt screw with a short head; it still works fine on my '87 Seville.
