Don't know about the longitudinal engine, but I use a 15mm dist. wrench on my 85 FWD Deville. Yanking the distributor is VERY easy once you get the nut off and the hold down clamp. Just make sure you mark everything. If it's even moderately close upon reassembly, the car will start and you can time it.

It is very possible that there is a special wrench for that at an auto parts store. I know that i have one for the older gm products that is basically bent like a upside down L. It just might be worth the $ to buy it and save some frustration.

They're easily available and pretty cheap (distributor wrenches). You might also try a stubby wrench.

Snap-On has the specific wrench for that task on the 4.9 etc. I ordered it directly from their headquarters and it arrived in two days. None of the truck jockeys have it so go direct. It cost me $45.00 for it and it was worth every penny to not have the car's timing botched by the dealer. It works on the 4.1 and 4.9 from 1986 to 1993.

Here's what you want:

Snap On part Stock #: S6134.

This part is for, according to Snap On, "1982 and later Cadillac 4.1L V8 and GM 2.8L V6" engines.

Here's the link:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

Hope the helps!

How can you get a discount off on Snap On parts? I love their tools, they're just so darn expensive.

Re: 4.1/4100 Distributor Hold down- how to tighten???

Thanks a lot for the link..

I get 55% off because I am a full time student at a technical school that uses Snap On tools.. They offer us (students) 55% off the majority of Snap On tools (I believe this excludes scan tools, non snap-on products in their catalog(ie-fluke dmm's)

I have a friend that is an instructor at a local Vocational High school, he told me that he'd order tools for me after I'm done with school

To my knowledge, most community colleges that offer "technical" classes (welding, automotive tech) also are entitled to this discount.

If you'd like, I can get my Snap-On rep's phone number, email address.. He'd be able to give you more accurate info...
