    4.1 oil capacity

Can anyone tell me what the correct oil capacity for a 4.1 is? The service manual says it is 4 quarts with or without the filter. How can it be the same with or without filter change? I find this fact hard to believe, I'd like to understand how this can be. My dad and mechanic insist it takes 5 quarts. They've been using that much for the past 15 years and 50,000 miles and the engine runs fine, so maybe 5 quarts is correct.
I also have another side question about the dip stick. How the hell do you read this thing? I has an add one quart range, then a full range. Is it full at the lower or upper part of the full range or is it full when it reads anywhere in the full range? Personally I think it's a really bad design. Any help on either question would be greatly appreciated.

That engine requires 5 quarts to my recollection when the filter is changed. The thought was that the filter volume is relatively small so 5 quarts puts it in the operating range regardless. No one realized that people would be so obcessive over oil level.

Thanks for the critique on a 22 year old dipstick design....LOL

Put 5 quarts in at the change, start the engine and let it idle and then shut it off and check the stick. That will give you some insight on how the stick reads. If you KNOW you put 5 quarts in then that will be the baseline on the stick for reference....

I use 5 qts in the 4.1 in my '85 Fleetwood Brougham. I think coupedevillebob is referring to the chilton book, because my stupid chilton says "use 4 w/out filter change".

I was referring to the Cadillac service manual. The Chilton book says the same though.
